Abstract

Styrbar polarisasjonsomformer omfattende en passiv modusomformer (4), en styrbar faseforskyver (5) og et styrbart Mach-Zehnder interferometer (7). Modusomformeren (4) omformer den første signalkom- ponent hos en polarisasjon (TE eller TM) hos et lyssignal som kommer inn via en inngang (1) til en signalkomponent hos den andre polarisasjon uten å påvirke den andre signalkomponent hos den andre polarisasjon (TM eller TE), idet omformingen finner sted i en annen orden enn den ledede modus. Fasestyring ved hjelp av faseforskyveren (5) styrer intentitetsfordelingen av lyssignalet over de to grener (8 og 9) i interferometeret (7). Optisk belgelengdestyring i interferometeret (7) styrer fasen med hvilken signalene gjennom grenene kommer sammen i utgangen (2). Fordeler: svært god integrasjonsegenskap, for- trinnsvis på halvledermateriale, med en bolgeleder- struktur som kan oppnås i et eneste etsende trinn og uten kritiske produksjonsparametere, kan brukes resiprokt, selv som en polarisasjonsmodulator.
