Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily integrate a switching element and waveguides on the same substrate by providing the optical switching element and the waveguides which are coupled optically with the element and transmits only a TM wave selectively on the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The optical switching element and waveguides 105 and 106 which are coupled optically with it are provided on an n-type clad layer 102, and part of a dielectric clad layer 107 is substituted with metallic layers 108 and 109. When a light signal arrives from the left, the metallic layer 108 removes its TE wave and only the TM wave enters the element 101. Light which is incident through the waveguide layer 104 is coupled optically with an active layer 103 to cause switching between the TE wave and TM wave. Consequently, light which is projected consists of the TE wave and TM wave, but the TE wave is removed by the metallic layer 109 and only the TM wave is outputted. Consequently, the element 101 and waveguides are easily integrated on the same substrate.
