Abstract

PURPOSE:To cut off return light and to facilitate integration by providing a polarizing filter which transmits only linear polarized light and a polarization control means which converts return light from an output terminal into linear polarized light in an orthogonal direction on an optical path which connected an input terminal and the output terminal mutually. CONSTITUTION:The linear polarized light emitted by a semiconductor laser 10 is propagated in an optical waveguide 2, transmitted through the polarizing filter, and incident on an optical fiber 11 through the polarization control element. The light is reflected repeatedly in the optical fiber 11 to become the elliptic polarized light, which returns to the phase shifter 7 of the polarization control element 8 and passes through the phase shifter 7 and a mode converter 6; and only a linear polarized light component having the same plane of polarization with the projection light of the semiconductor laser is transmitted and a liner polarized component which has a plane of polarization perpendicular to it is cut off. Part of the reflected light component transmitted through the polarizing filter 4 is branched to an optical waveguide 2' to become monitor light for control. A control circuit 15 applies a control voltage to the polarization control element so as to converge the intensity of this monitor light to zero, thereby cutting off the return light.
