Abstract

PURPOSE:To form an optical isolator having a high isolation ratio with a low cost and a good yield by arranging a magneto-optical element between a polarizer and an analyzer and providing a total reflection mirror of one end face of the analyzer. CONSTITUTION:Transmission and polarization directions of a polarizer 1 are made different by 45 deg., and a magneto-optical element 3 which has 45 deg. Farady rotation by a magnet 4 is arranged between the polarizer 1 and an analyzer 2, and a total reflection mirror 5 is provided on one end face of the analyzer 2. An incident light L1 is converted to a linearly polarized light by the polarizer and is rotated at 45 deg. by the optical element 3 and is transmitted through the analyzer 2 and is reflected on the total reflection mirror 5 and is converted to a transmitted light L2 by the polarizer 1 and is emitted. A return light L3 is rotated at 45 deg. by the element 3 and is made incident on the analyzer 2, and this light becomes a loss light L5 on the outside of the optical path because its polarization direction is orthogonal to the polarization direction of the light transmitted to the reflection mirror 5. Thus, the optical isolator having a high isolation ratio is formed with a low cost and a good yield.
