Abstract

Treatment of ferrous and/or ferric sulphates produced by concentration of the wash solns. produced during the physical chemical purification of combustion gases and other gases contg. sulphur cpds. is effected by heating the sulphates in the presence of carbon at 600-1100 degrees C pref. 900-1050 degrees C. The sulphates are heated in the absence of air. The amt. of carbon is 5-7 pref. 5.5-6.5% wt. based on sulphates, for the prepn. of Fe3O4, and is ca. 15% wt. for the prepn. of Fe. Converts the ferrous and/or ferric sulphates into Fe3O4 and/or Fe, which can be used in the gas purification process, and SO2 which can be used for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.
