Coke, for use in prodn. of cast iron is desulphurised by first treating the charcoal, tar, pitch, etc. used for its mfr. with an oxidising gas to reduce amt. of sulphur that may be retained by the organic material and the degree of pyritic sulphur of the charcoal, etc. Pref. oxidising gas is O2, O3, air, halogen, N oxides and water vapour, opt. in admixt. with each other and opt. in admixt. with HCl, CO2, N2 or flue gases.
