Abstract

The desulphurisation of coal is carried out by (a) heating coal particles to 100-500 degrees F, and (c) contacting the hot coal with a gas contg. NO2 (rest non-reactive components) to selectively oxidise the S cpds. in the coal, forming oxidised S cpds. (sulphates and sulphites) and gaseous S cpds. which are readily separable from the coal. High degrees of desulphurisation (e.g. 56-87%) can be achieved; saleable H2SO4 can be obtd. as a by-prod.
