Abstract

A cleaning compsn. contains (1) 5-25 wt.% ethoxylated linear alkanols of formula: CH3-(CH2)n-CH-(CH2)m-CH3 where n + m = 5-17 and p = 5-10, (2) 5-25 wt.% organic solvent, (3) 0-25 wt.% sequestering agent, (4) 0-25 wt.% polyalkanolamines, (5) 0-10 wt.% polyalkanolamine fatty alcohol sulphates, (6) 0-10 wt.% fatty alkanol polyglycol ether carboxylic acids, at least 1 of the components (5) and (6) being present, and (7) is not >50 wt.% water. In prepng. the compsn., (1) is mixed with (2) and 1 or more of (5) and (6); water is mixed with 1 or more of (3), (4), (5) and (6), and the first soln. is added to the second. The compsn. can be used to clean metals, e.g. Al, thermohardening and thermoplastic synthetics, and lacquers, e.g. on metals. When diluted to a total 80-99% water content, the compsns. are coolants, lubricants and cutting compsns. for working metals and synthetics. Compsn. is water-miscible, stable, non-poisonous and not harmful to health, and does not attack metals, synthetics or lacquers. Additives, e.g. organometallic cpds., can be included without damaging the properties of the compsn.
