Abstract

1,065,612. Contacting gases with liquids &c. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 21, 1964 [March 4. 1963], No. 8611/63. Heading B1R. [Also in Divisions B5 and F4] A packing for film flow liquid cooling apparatus comprises a stack of alternate flat and corrugated sheets, each corrugation having a portion which is curved in the plane of the sheet to an extent sufficient to preclude a straight line path through that portion of the corrugation. As shown, each corrugation has two sides 1, 2, which form a V at an apex 3 with an included angle of 60‹, and has an upper curved portion 10, 11 and a lower straight portion. In the curved portion the corrugation is first displaced by a distance C to one side of the axis 5, i.e. the vertical line passing through the uppermost end of the apex 3, and is then displaced by a distance D to the other side of the axis, the distances C and D each being equal to half the width of the corrugation B. The lower part of the corrugation may be curved to such an extent that the lowermost point of the apex 3 lies on the axis 5 (Figs. 3 and 5, not shown), while in the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown) the upper portion of the corrugation is displaced to only one side of the axis by an amount equal to the width of the corrugation. When the sheets are assembled alternately with flat sheets to form the packing, the corrugations may all curve in the same sense (Fig. 4, not shown) or may be arranged (Fig. 5, not shown) so that the corrugations (30) and (34) of the sheets on opposite sides of the flat sheet (32) curve in opposite senses. The three sheets are secured together by stud and socket means at those points (35, 36) at which the corrugations on opposite sides of sheet (32) could be in contact if the latter were omitted. The sheets are formed of organic thermoplastic material; a list of suitable materials being given.
