BACKGROUND
The inorganic nutrients necessary for plant growth are three elements: N, P and K (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). Nitrogen is the main component of protein, nucleic acid and phospholipid, which are important components of protoplasm, nucleus and biofilm. They play a special role in life activities, among which nitrogen is also called life element. Vegetables and fruits have a great demand for N, P and K, so the purpose of applying fertilizer for many times in production is to meet their needs for the three elements.
The main sources of nitrogen supply in agricultural production are human and animal manure, urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, ammonium bicarbonate and other fertilizers that people apply to the soil, all of which are chemically synthesised nitrogen fertilizers, i.e. synthetic ammonia, with the exception of human faeces. Commonly used phosphate fertilizers are mainly superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate and diammonium phosphate. The main potassium fertilizers used are potassium chloride, potassium sulphate, potassium nitrate, potassium phosphate (monopotassium phosphate, potassium polyphosphate) and plant ash, among which all the others are chemical compounds except plant ash.
Due to the long-term and extensive use of chemical fertilizers in agricultural production, some problems such as soil acidification, salinization, impoverishment, hardening, low product quality and increased non-point source pollution appear in most farmland.
The application of organic fertilizer in agricultural production can increase the content of organic matter, loosen the soil and improve the utilization rate of chemical fertilizer. The use of bio-organic fertilizers or bio-fertilizers, which contain natural strains of functional bacteria with low efficacy, can replace a small amount of chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers, increase the number of micro-organisms in the soil and improve the soil in the short term, but they cannot completely replace chemical fertilizers.
