Abstract
The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a magnetic-disk glass substrate (1) according to which it is possible to improve the shape accuracy of an edge surface of a glass substrate (10) and finish the glass substrate to (10) a high quality. In the present invention, linear magnetic field lines (25) that extend in the thickness direction of the glass substrate (10) are formed using a magnetism generating means constituted by a pair of magnets (21, 22) disposed facing each other, and the magnetic field lines (25) are caused to hold a magnetic slurry containing a magnetorheological fluid and polishing abrasive particles so as to form a mass of the magnetic slurry (26) along the magnetic field lines (25). Thereafter, both a side wall surface (12a) and a chamfered surface (12b) of the edge surface of the glass substrate (10) are polished simultaneously by bringing the edge surface of the glass substrate into contact with the mass of the magnetic slurry (26) in a state in which the horizontal plane of the glass substrate (10) is inclined with respect to the plane direction orthogonal to the directions of the magnetic field lines (25).
