Abstract

When, during manufacture of a magnetic-disk glass substrate (11), end surface polishing is performed on the glass substrate (11), magnetic field lines that extend in a thickness direction of the glass substrate (11) are formed using a magnetism generating means, a magnetic slurry containing polishing abrasive particles and a magnetic functional fluid is disposed in the magnetic field lines to hold the magnetic slurry along the magnetic field lines, and the end surface of the glass substrate (11) is brought into contact with the magnetic slurry held along the magnetic field lines, and the end surface and the magnetic slurry are moved relative to each other in the contacting state to polish the end surface of the glass substrate (11).
