Abstract

투명전극(2a), (2b) 및 배향막(3a), (3b)을 이 순으로 배설한 1쌍의 기판(1a), (1b) 이 소정의 간극을 두고 대향배치되고, 상기 간극내에 강유전성 액정(5)이 주입되어 있는 액정소자로서, 이 액정을 스위칭하기 위한 한계치전압이 다른 영역이 미세하게 분포하고 있는 액정소자. 그와 같은 미세분포는 반전(反轉)도메인에 의한 투과율이 25%일때에 2㎛Ø이상의 크기의 도메인(마이크로도메인)이 1㎟의 시야중에 300개 이상(바람직하기로는 600개이상) 존재하고, 또한 그 도메인내에서의 한계치전압폭이 투과율 10∼90%의 범위에서 2볼트 이상인 것. 액정소자 특히 강유전성 액정표시소자에 있어서 고콘트라스트를 유지하면서, 특히 아날로그계조표시를 저코스트로 하여 용이하고도 확실하게 실현하는 것을 목적으로 하는 것이다.

Claims (25)

1쌍의 기체(基體)사이에 액정이 배설되어 있는 액정소자에 있어서, 상기 액정을 스위칭하기 위한 한계치전압이 다른 영역이 미세하게 분포되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항에 있어서, 투명전극 및 배향막을 이 순으로 배설한 1쌍의 기판이 소정의 간극을 두고 대향배치되고, 상기 간극내에 강유전성 액정이 주입되어있는 액정소자로서, 반전(反轉)도메인에 의한 투과율이 25%일때에 2㎛Ø이상의 크기의 도메인이 1㎟의 시야중에 300개 이상 존재하고, 또한 그 도메인내에서의 한계치전압폭이 투과율 10∼90%의 범위에서 2볼트 이상이며, 이것에 의해 계조(階調)표시를 행할 수 있도록 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 또는 제2항에 있어서, 한계치전압이 다른 복수의 도메인을 구성하는 액정분자의 외관상의 틸트각이 모노도메인의 상태보다 ±1°이상 변화하고 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제3항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 한계치전압이 다른 복수의 도메인을 구성하는 액정분자의 콘각의 온도의존성이 모노도메인의 상태보다 작은 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제4항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 한계치전압이 다른 복수의 도메인을 구성하는 액정분자의 외관상의 프레틸트각의 분포폭이 1화소내에서 6°이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제5항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 2종류 이상의 전압을 인가하여 2종류 이상의 계조레벨을 얻도록 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제6항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 한계치전압이 다른 미세영역을 형성하기 위해 미립자가 액정에 첨가되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항에 있어서, 미립자가 pH2.0이상의 표면을 가지고 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 또는 제8항에 있어서, 미립자가 50중량% 이하의 비율로 액정에 첨가되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 내지 제9항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 미립자가 카본블랙 및/또는 산화티탄으로 이루어져 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제10항에 있어서, 카본블랙이 퍼니스법으로 제작된 카본블랙이며, 산화티탄이 아모르피스 산화티탄인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 내지 제11항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 계조표시특성을 첨가되는 미립자의 입도분포에 의해 콘트롤하도록 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제12항에 있어서, 미립자의 입도분포의 표준편차가 9.0nm 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 내지 제13항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 미립자의 비중이 액정의 0.1∼10배인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 내지 제13항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 미립자가 양호 분산성을 나타내도록 표면처리되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제7항 내지 제15항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 기체상의 배설된 배향막이 복수의 사방주(斜方柱) 형상체로 이루어지는 사방(斜方) 증착막에 의해 형성되고, 상기 복수의 사방주형상체 사이에 도전성 물질의 최소한 일부분이 개재하고 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제16항에 있어서, 도전성 물질의 도전율이 증착막 및/또는 액정의 도전율보다 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제16항 또는 제17항에 있어서, 도전성 물질의 도전율이 1×10-12S/㎠이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제18항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 전하이동착체(錯體), 유기안료, 금속, 산화물 및 플루오르화물로 이루어지는 군에서 산정된 물질이 배향막상에 적층되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제16항 내지 제18항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 제19항에 기재한 물질이 도전성 물질인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제16항 내지 제20항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 배향막이 증착 후에 어닐된 것임을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제21항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 배향막이 산화실리콘의 증착막으로 이루어져 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제22항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 액정의 층경사막이 배향막 근방영역과 이것 이외의 벌크영역에서 다른 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제1항 내지 제23항중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 액정의 층경사각을 나타내는 X선 회절강도의 피크가 X선 입사각 90° 이하 또는 90° 이상에 있어서 최소한 2개 존재하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
제24항에 있어서, X선 회절강도의 피크의 반치폭(半値幅)이 3°이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정소자.
