본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따르면, 매체, 특히 CD와 같은 이동식 저장 매체는 암호화되거나 또는 몇몇 다른 형태의 비권한 액세스로부터 보호되는 디지털 음악 파일을 저장 매체에 저장한다. 디지털 파일은 예컨대, Sony사의 ATRACTM, MP3, Microsoft Window사의 Media AudioTM(WMA)와 같은 잘알려진 오디오 압축 알고리즘을 이용하여 압축되는 오디오 음악을 포함하나, 오디오는 "통상(normal)"의 CD 피델리티(fidelity)일 수 있다. 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따르면, 플레이어 소프트웨어의 완결성(integrity)은 본 발명에 의해 제공되는 보안 및 제어를 보장하기 위하여 유지된다. 플레이어 소프트웨어가 탬퍼된다면, 보호되지 않은 형태로 디지털 콘텐츠에 대한 액세스를 얻는 것이 가능하게 된다. 플레이어 소프트웨어가 저장 매체로부터 직접 실행될 때, 탬퍼될 가능성은 없게 된다. 그러나, 컴퓨터상에 설치될 때, 리버스 엔지니어링(reverse engineering) 및 다른 탬퍼링을 받기 쉬워진다. 플레이어 소프트웨어의 완결성을 인증하는 하나의 가능한 방법은, 저장 매체가 컴퓨터로 삽입될 때마다, 플에이어 소프트웨어 또는 그 일부가 컴퓨터상에 재설치되게 하는 것이다. 탬퍼되었을 수 있는 임의의 기존 플레이어 소프트웨어는 간단하게 덮어쓰기, 소거 또는 디스에이블된다. 플레이어 소프트웨어를 보호하는 다른 방법은, 플레이어 소프트웨어, 또는 매체가 삽입될 때 실행되는 저장 매체 상의 또 다른 소프트웨어 프로그램이, 디지털 서명, 체크섬 또는 임의의 다른 공지된 완결성 체킹 방법을 이용하여, 컴퓨터 상에 이미 설치되어 있는 플레이어 소프트웨어를 체크하게 하는 것이다. 플레이어 소프트웨어가 완결성 체크를 실패한다면, 그것은 거절 또는 덮어쓰기된다. 다르게는, 완결성 체킹 소프트웨어는 네트워크를 이용하여 중앙 서버에 연결되며, 그 서버가 플레이어 소프트웨어 및 심지어 저장 매체 자체에서 완결성 체킹 루틴을 수행하도록 요청한다.
본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에서, 디지털 파일의 사본들은 여러 방식으로 암호화 또는 보호된다. 파일을 보호하는 하나의 가능한 방법은 고유한 키를 이용하여 각 파일의 사본 각각을 암호화하는 것이다. 예컨대, 플레이어 소프트웨어는 각각의 암호화된 노래 또는 트랙을 CD로부터 로딩하며, 이를 적당한 키를 이용하여 암호해제하고, 트랙의 4개의 사본들을 생성하여, 사본 각각을 서로 다른 키로 암호화한다. 이런 방법은 비권한 액세스에 대항하는 가장 높은 레벨의 보안을 제공하나, 복사 동작을 수행하는데 보다 많은 시간을 요구하며, 더욱 많은 수의 키를 관리할 필요도 있다. 다르게는, 특정 컴퓨터 상에 만들어진 특정 트랙의 사본들 모두가 동일한 키로 암호화되거나, 또는 한 트랙의 모든 사본들이 사본이 생성되는 컴퓨터 종류에 무관하게 동일 키로 암호화될 수 있다. 암호화 키는 복사를 수행하는 컴퓨터상에서 국부적으로 발생되며, 중앙 서버로부터 다운로드되고, 또는 저장 매체상에 이미 존재하기도 한다. 사용되는 암호화 알고리즘은 예컨대 컴퓨터 또는 휴대용 장치의 성능에 부작용을 낼 정도로 너무 계산적이지 않고, 적당한 보호의 균형을 제공하는 임의의 대칭 또는 비대칭 암호화 알고리즘일 수 있다.
본 발명은 설명된 특정 실시예에 제한되지 않는다. 본 기술 분야의 전문가에게는 본 발명의 원리를 구현하며 본 발명의 범위내에 있는 다른 예를 구현할 수 있음이 자명하다.

    상기 저장 매체 상에 저장된 상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 보호된 버전(protected version)
    을 포함하고,
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트가 Redbook 오디오 트랙들(Redbook audio tracks)이고,
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 상기 보호된 버전은 상기 Redbook 오디오 트랙들의 암호화되고 압축된 사본들이고,
    상기 저장 매체 상에 저장되며, 상기 컴퓨터 시스템에 의해 실행되도록 구성된 복수의 명령어 -상기 복수의 명령어는, 실행될 때, 상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 상기 보호된 버전의 사용을 제어하는데 이용되는 일련의 단계들을 정의함-를 더 포함하며,
    상기 단계들은:
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 상기 보호된 버전의 제한된 수의 사본들을 생성하는 단계;
    상기 컴퓨터 시스템에 연결된 저장 장치 상에 상기 제한된 수의 사본들을 저장하는 단계; 및
    상기 제한된 수의 사본들로의 액세스를 제어하는 단계
    를 포함하는 디지털 저장 매체.
  6. 제5항에 있어서, 상기 액세스는 상기 제한된 수의 사본들의 복사를 방지함에 의해 제어되는 디지털 저장 매체.
  7. 제5항에 있어서, 상기 액세스는 상기 제한된 수의 사본들이 인증된 장치에만 전송되도록 허용함에 의해 제어되는 디지털 저장 매체.
  8. 제7항에 있어서, 상기 인증된 장치에 전송된 제한된 수의 사본에는, 더이상 전송될 수 없다는 것을 나타내도록 표시가 되는 디지털 저장 매체.

    상기 디지털 저장 매체에 사전에 기록된 정보에 기초하여, 생성될 사본들의 제한된 수를 결정하는 단계를 더 포함하는 디지털 저장 매체.
  13. 제12항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 저장 매체에 기록된 상기 정보는 상기 컴퓨터 시스템을 식별하는 정보를 포함하는 디지털 저장 매체.
  14. 제13항에 있어서, 상기 컴퓨터 시스템을 식별하는 상기 정보는 상기 컴퓨터 시스템의 하드웨어 구성에 대한 정보를 포함하는 디지털 저장 매체.
  15. 제12항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 저장 매체에 기록된 상기 정보는 생성된 사본의 수를 식별하는 정보를 포함하는 디지털 저장 매체.
  16. 이동식 매체 상에 배포된 보호된 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용을 제어하기 위한 방법에 있어서,
    컴퓨터 시스템에 의해 상기 이동식 매체를 판독하는 단계;
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠의 소정 수의 보호된 사본들을 생성하는 단계;
    상기 컴퓨터에 연결된 저장 장치 상에 상기 보호된 사본들을 저장하는 단계; 및
    상기 보호된 사본들 중 적어도 하나를 또 다른 장치에 이동시키는 단계
    를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  17. 제16항에 있어서, 상기 보호된 사본들의 수는 상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 정보에 기초하여 결정되는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  18. 제17항에 있어서, 상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 정보는 사본들이 이전에 생성되었던 컴퓨터 시스템을 식별하는 정보를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  19. 제18항에 있어서, 상기 식별 정보가 상기 컴퓨터 시스템 내의 하드웨어 구성 요소들에 대한 정보를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  20. 제17항에 있어서, 상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 정보는 이전에 얼마나 많은 사본들이 생성되었는지에 대한 정보를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  21. 제16항에 있어서, 상기 보호된 사본들 중 적어도 하나를 또 다른 장치에 이동시키는 단계가,
    상기 보호된 사본들 중 상기 적어도 하나를 또 다른 장치에 복사하는 단계; 및
    상기 컴퓨터 시스템으로부터 상기 보호된 사본들 중 상기 적어도 하나를 삭제하는 단계
    를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  22. 제16항에 있어서, 상기 보호된 사본들 중 상기 적어도 하나를 이동시키기 전에 상기 또 다른 장치를 인증하는 단계를 더 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  23. 제22항에 있어서, 상기 또 다른 장치를 인증하는 단계가, 상기 또 다른 장치가 상기 디지털 콘텐츠의 보호된 사본들을 수신하도록 인증되었는지의 여부를 판정하는 단계를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  24. 제23항에 있어서, 상기 또 다른 장치는 또 다른 컴퓨터 시스템인 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  25. 제23항에 있어서, 상기 또 다른 장치는 휴대용 장치인 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.

    상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 소프트웨어를 실행시켜, 상기 소정 수의 보호된 사본들을 생성하고 저장하는 단계들을 행하도록 하는 단계를 더 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  27. 제26항에 있어서, 상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 소프트웨어의 완결성(integrity)을 인증하는 단계를 더 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.

    상기 컴퓨터 시스템 상에, 상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 상기 소프트웨어를 인스톨하는 단계를 더 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  29. 이동식 매체 상에 배포된 보호된 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용을 제어하기 위한 방법에 있어서,
    컴퓨터 시스템에 의해 상기 이동식 매체를 판독하는 단계;
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠의 제한된 수의 보호된 사본들을 생성하는 단계;
    상기 컴퓨터 시스템에 연결된 저장 장치 상에 상기 제한된 수의 보호된 사본들을 저장하는 단계; 및
    상기 이동식 매체 상에 저장된 제어 정보에 기초하여 상기 제한된 수의 보호된 사본들로의 액세스를 제어하는 단계
    를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  30. 제29항에 있어서, 상기 제어 정보는 이전에 사본들이 생성되었던 컴퓨터 시스템을 식별하는 정보를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.
  31. 제30항에 있어서, 상기 식별 정보는 상기 컴퓨터 시스템 내의 하드웨어 구성 요소들에 대한 정보를 포함하는 디지털 콘텐츠의 사용 제어 방법.

  37. 디지털 데이터를 저장하고 있는 디지털 저장 매체에 있어서,
    컴퓨터 시스템 상에서 판독이 가능하지 않도록 구성된 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트;
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 보호된 버전; 및
    상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 상기 보호된 버전으로의 액세스를 제어하기 위한 실행가능 소프트웨어
    를 포함하며, 상기 소프트웨어는 상기 디지털 콘텐츠 데이터의 복수의 세그먼트의 상기 보호된 버전의 제한된 수의 사본들을 생성하고, 더이상의 추가의 사본들이 생성되지 않는 한, 이들 사본들이 인증된 장치들에 전송되도록 허용하는 디지털 저장 매체.
