Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform efficient SHG conversion by specifying the relation between the wave number of an optical waveguide to the basic wave of a 1st channel optical waveguide and the wave number of a 2nd channel optical waveguide to the 2nd higher harmonic of said basic wave. CONSTITUTION:The converting element consists of two optical waveguides 2 and 3 formed on a crystal substrate 1 at the same place and a dielectric 4 which is provided on those waveguides and varies the period of the equivalent refractive index of waveguide light. In this case, the equivalent refractive index n(omega) to the basic wave of 0.83mum wavelength of the Ti diffused waveguide 2 is 2.177 and the equivalent refractive index n(2omega) to SHG light of 0.415 wavelength of the H<+> converting waveguide 3 where SHG should to be propagated is 2.387. Consequently, the two waves have a difference in phase constant (b) and conversion from the basic wave to SHG light is not performed in this state. The SHG conversion, however, is performed on condition that there is variation in refractive index of a period lambdamum satisfying beta(2omega)-2beta(omega)=2pi/lambda, namely, n(2omega)-n(omega)=0.415/lambda.
