Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform filtering and branching of light of good diffractive index efficiency with a simple constitution by such things as providing specified electrodes in the optical guides of asymmetricaly propagation constants which are coupled, changing the propagation constants according to applied voltage, etc. CONSTITUTION:Optical guides 1, 2 of asymmetrical propagation constants beta1, beta2 provided with the electrodes 19, 19 formed of layers of refractive indices slightly higher than those of ferrodielectric crystal LiNbO3, LiTaO3, etc. are installed on a substrate whose surfaces are thermally diffused with metal element such as Ti or other. When contants beta1, beta2 of the optical guides 1, 2 change and the central light wavelength of the filter band region and light wavelength region corresponding to phase matching by the constants beta1, beta2 are adjusted without decreasing diffractive index effect. Hence, the circuit element capable of performing branching and filtering of light at good diffractive index effect with the simple constitution is obtained without using any optical quides of highly accurate asymmetrical propagation constants. The similar results may also be obtained even by forming one of the optical guides in taper form.
