Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain a high yield point even after a stainless steel contg. Nb is subjected to a heat treatment for forming NbSn and to improve characteristics such as ductility and toughness by subjecting said stainless steel to the heat treatment under specific temp. conditions. CONSTITUTION:The stainless steel having the compsn. consisting, by weight, of <=0.02% C, 0.1-1.0% Si, 0.1-2.0% Mn, 7-15% Ni, 12-20% Cr, 0.5-2.5% Mo, 0.01-0.18% Nb, 0.05-0.25 N, and the balance Fe is smelted by an ordinary method. The stainless steel is first worked at 1,025-1,250 deg.C to solutionize the carbide and nitride. The stainless steel is then finished by hot working at >=1,000 deg.C by taking the recrystallization restoration and the influence on the subsequent aging into consideration. The steel is thereafter cooled down to 800 deg.C at <=1 deg.C/sec average cooling rate and is further cooled at an arbitrary cooling rate to relief the strains after the hot working. The austenitic stainless steel having the excellent ductility and toughness is, therefore, produced without executing a soln. heat treatment and stabilization heat treatment.
