Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an ester compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, using an easily available reagent without causing safety problem, by using sodium borohydride and aluminum chloride as reducing agents in the reduction of a specific ester compound used as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II can be produced by reducing an ester compound of formula I [R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are lower alkyl n is 0-21; X is H or (protected) hydroxy; Y is (protected) hydroxy] with a reducing agent consisting of a mixture of sodium borohydride and aluminum chloride preferably in the presence of water usually at 0-140 deg.C, preferably 10-40 deg.C. The amount of the sodium borohydride is usually >=1.5mol., preferably about 2mol. per 1mol. of the starting compound of formula I and the molar ratio of aluminum chloride to sodium borohydride is preferably about 1:3.
