Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulas II and III (R is 1W15C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: A 4-alkoxy-4'-fluoroazoxybenzene.
USE: A component for a liquid crystal stable to moisture, electricity, etc.
PROCESS: p-Fluoroaniline of formula V is reacted with NaNO2 in HCl to give a diazonium salt of formula VI, which is then coupled with phenol in the presence of NaOH-AcONa (Ac is acetyl) to afford 4-hydroxy-4'-fluoroazobenzene of formula VII. The resultant compound is then reacted with NaOH and RBr or an alkyl p- toluenesulfonate in an alcohol to give a 4-alkoxy-4'-fluoroazobenzene of formula IV, which is then reacted with H2O2 in the presence of Ac2O-AcOH to affored the compound of formulas II and III (as an isomeric mixture).
