Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a transparent protective layer suitable for protecting a transparent thermal recording layer, by composing the protective layer mainly of carboxymethyl cellulose and colloidal silica. CONSTITUTION:A thermal recording material is produced by a method wherein microcapsules containing a colorless or light-colored basic dye precursor therein and a color developer dissolved in an organic solvent difficultly soluble or insoluble in water are emulsified or dispersed, a coating liquid containing the emulsified or dispersed material thus obtained is applied to a base, followed by drying to provide a thermal recording layer, and a protective layer is provided thereon. The protective layer is constituted mainly of carboxymethyl cellulose and colloidal silica. The basic dye precursor is appropriately selected from colorless or light-colored compounds capable of forming a color by giving an electron or accepting a proton from an acid or the like. With the protective layer constituted mainly of carboxymethyl cellulose and colloidal silica, it is possible to protect the surface of the thermal recording layer having favorable transparency, to provide favorable transparency and to improve sticking to a thermal head.
