Abstract

PURPOSE: A photochromic material, having a rapid response due to the quick progress of coloring and decoloring, a bright color and improved reversibility of the coloring and decoloring, and containing a viologen compound exprssed by a specific structural formula.
CONSTITUTION: A viologen compound expressed by formula I (R is 1W12C organic group, e.g. methyl, propyl or isopropyl) is dissolved in preferably an alcohol, e.g. methanol, as a solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, to solubilize the viologen cation radical which is a reduced colorant expressed by formula II. Thus, a photochromic material capable of passing through the process of coloring and decoloring quickly due to no deposition of the colored layer in the coloring process.
