Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal recording material having a transparent protective layer, having a recording surface less liable to be marred and being favorable in transparency of a thermal recording layer itself, by incorporating a specified amount of a hardener into the protective layer. CONSTITUTION:A thermal recording material is produced by a method wherein microcapsules containing a colorless or light-colored basic dye precursor therein and a color developer dissolved in an organic solvent difficultly soluble or insoluble in water are emulsified or dispersed, a coating liquid containing the emulsified or dispersed material thus obtained is applied to a base, followed by drying to provide a thermal recording layer, and a protective layer is provided thereon. The thermal recording layer and/or the protective layer comprises 0.01-10wt.% (dry weight) of a hardener. The hardener is used for enhancing the mar resistance of the thermal recording layer having favorable transparency. The hardener is preferably a dialdehyde such as glutaraldehyde and 2,3- dihydorxy-1,4-dioxane or boric acid. When a combination of a silicon-modified polyvinyl alcohol and/or carboxymethyl cellulose with colloidal silica is used for the protective layer, the transparency of the protective layer is made extremely favorable.
