Abstract

CONSTITUTION:One of a 1st electrode part and a 2nd electrode part is composed of a high-resistance conductive film 2, the striped low-resistance electric transmission electrode 3 arrayed on the high-resistance conductive film 2, and an insulator 4 arranged between the edge part of the high-resistance conductive film 2 and the low-resistance electric transmission electrode 3, and ferroelectric liquid crystal is used as an optical modulating material. Namely, the edge part of the conductive film has low resistance, so the edge part which becomes irregular in resistance and the electric transmission electrode can be insulated from each other. Consequently, a uniform potential gradient is obtained over the entire surface of the cell, variance in display characteristics is eliminated, and a stable gradational display is made.
