Abstract

The liquid crystal display includes a display element and excitation circuit. This block has a layer of liquid crystal (1), such that the transmission and or reflection of light is a function of the value of an electric field. The liquid crystal layer (1) is arranged between two plates (2, 3) which form part of the block. One is a support plate (2) made from an insulating material. The other is a transparent observation plate (3) also of insulating material. The face of this observation is in contact with the liquid crystal material (1). One of the plaques is covered by an arrangement of conducting layer zones (4, 5) connected to excitation contacts (5a). Selective application of electric fields to these zones (5) determines the displayed characters.
