Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable positive detection of possible fine knocking with a higher S/N ratio in the detection of knocking, by providing a means to set a filter band of a band pass filter narrower and altering the filter band. CONSTITUTION:A knocking sensor 15 is mounted at a cylinder 2 portion of an engine 1 to detect vibration of the engine 1 and peak level of engine vibration signals passing through three band pass filters 17S1, 17M and 17S2 is detected with a peak level detection circuit 18. Then, a knocking frequency detection circuit 20 detects an actual frequency of generated knocking vibration from three peak level values and cutoff frequencies of three filters and a cutoff frequency alteration circuit 21 alters cutoff frequencies of the three filters. A knocking decision circuit 19 compares a peak level of an output of the band pass filter 17M with a reference value corresponding to the moment of generating a knocking a decide on the movement of generating knocking.
