Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate erroneous detection by detecting vibration levels in >=2 frequency bands wherein the vibration levels each have a peak when knocking occurs and by deciding on knocking when the detected levels exceed predetermined values at the same time. CONSTITUTION:To the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine or the constituent body 1 of a head, etc., one case or two vibrating elements 2 and 3 each incorporated in a case are fitted. The elements 2 and 3 are both of a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive system and so set that they resonate at frequencies f1 and f2 where vibration levels when knocking occurs each have a peak. The vibrators 2 and 3 are connected to a knocking deciding device 6 through preamplifiers 4 and 5 and the deciding device 5 generates an output showing the occurrence of knocking from an output terminal 7 only when the outputs of the amplifiers 4 and 5 exceed a predetermined value H at the same time. Normally, the outputs are seldom detected exceeding the value H at the same time approximately at the frequencies f1 and f2, so that erroneous detection of knocking is eliminated.
