Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the possibility that the restart of printing in the absence of paper causes the loss of data and the failure and stain of a printing means, by a method wherein, when a controlled paper feed means is stopped, an edge from the presence of paper to the absence of paper is detected by a paper detecting means and an edge detecting means for the output. CONSTITUTION:During a paper feeding action, a difference between the position of a printing means and that of a paper detecting means 21 is taken into consideration using an override counting means. After the absence of paper, an override end in the override counting means is identified and, thereby, a paper absence state and a printing disabled state are set. On the other hand, if it is not during paper feeding, that a time sufficiently elapsed after the completion of a paper feed action and a paper is completely stopped in a stable state is identified by a timer means, and an edge is detected using an edge detecting means 22. If the edge is not identified as the presence of paper but as the absence of paper, a count for the override end is forcibly written in the override counting means, that the paper was extracted by a means other than a controlled paper feed means is recognized, and a printing disabled state is set.
