Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an alkylphenol in high yield by using relatively inexpensively obtainable 1,4-methyl-1-pentene as an alkylating agent and reacting the compound with a bihydric phenol to introduce two tertiary hexyl groups into the bihydric phenol. CONSTITUTION:1,4-Methyl-1-pentene readily and inexpensively producible by dimerization of propylene is used as an alkylating agent, reacted with a bihydric phenol (e.g., hydroquinone, catechol or resorcin), preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid and two tertiary hexyl (1,1- dimethylbutyl) are introduced into the bihydric phenol to give an alkylphenol [e.g. 2,5-di(1,1-dimethylbutyl)hydroquinone]. The alkylphenol is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a viscosity builder for styrene-butadiene rubber.
