Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-purity compound and to recover isobutene in high yield, by dealkylating 3,3',5,5'-tetratertiary butyl-4,4-dihydroxybiphenyl in the presence of an acid catalyst by using sulfolane as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining p,p'-biphenol by dealkylating 3,3',5,5'-tetratertiary butyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, the dealkylation is carried out by using sulfolane as a solvent and an acid such as sulfuric acid or a sulfonic acid as a catalyst to give high-purity p,p'-biphenol. Furthermore, recovered amount of isobutene can be raised and further the solvent can be reused. p,p'-Biphenol is useful as an antioxidant for fats and oils, a raw material for synthetic polymers such as polyester or polycarbonate, an intermediate for drugs and agricultural chemicals and an agent for photography. The sulfolane solvent prevents the reaction product from attaching itself to the wall of a reactor.
