Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve magnetizability, by forming a molten metal containing rare-earth elements composed principally of Sm, Cu, Fe, Zr, B, and Co in a specific proportion into a sheet metal of a specific thickness by means of direct continuous casting and rapid cooling treatments so as to inhibit the precipitation of coarse precipitated phase. CONSTITUTION:A molten alloy consisting of, by weight, 23-28% R (rare-earth elements composed principally of Sm), 4-10% Cu, 15-25% Fe, 0.2-5% Zr, 0.005-0.06% B, and the balance Co with inevitable impurities is cast by means of the known sheet-metal direct continuous caster, which is water cooled so as to be formed into a sheet-like rapidly cooled slab of <=3mm thickness. By adding trace amounts of B in this manner, a permanent magnet material composed principally of R2Co17 intermetallic compounds and excellent in magnetizability can be obtained and the magnetization of magnetic parts can be facilitated.
