Abstract

PURPOSE: To develop a rare earth element-Co permanent magnet with superior magnetic characteristics by casting an Sm-Co-Cu-Fe magnet alloy contg. a specified amount of Sm so that most of the solidified structure is made columnar, pulverizing the ingot, and binding the powder with resin.
CONSTITUTION: Starting materials for a rare earth element-Co permanent magnet consisting of 21W28% Sm and the balance Co, Cu and Fe are melted in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as Ar and cast in a mold D. By controlling the cooling rate of the molten metal, the cast alloy is solidified so that at least 95% columnar crystals B are contained in the solidified structure. The ingot is subjected to soln. heat treatment, aged, and pulverized. This powder is press- molded with resin as a binder in a magnetic field and heated to cure the resin. Thus, a permanent magnet composed chiefly of Sm2Co17 type crystals and having superior magnetic characteristics such as superior residual magnetic flux density and coercive force is obtd.
