Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the magnetic characteristics by casting a specified amount of Sm, Co, Cu, Fe and Hf and manufacturing a magnet using the cast alloy composed essentially of Sm2Co17 crystals and having a columnar structure as the microstructure of the ingot.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy consisting of 21W28wt% Sm, Co, Cu, Fe and Hf is cast to obtain a cast alloy composed essentially of Sm2Co17 crystals and having a columnar structure as the microstructure of the ingot. Ingots are cut out of the chilled layer A, the columnar structure B and the isometric structure C of the alloy ingot 1, and they are subjected to solid-solution treatment, aging and magnetic hardening. The hardened material is pulverized, and the powder is kneaded with an org. binder and press-molded in a magnetic field. The resin in the molding is then cured by suitable heating to complete a magnet.
