Abstract

PURPOSE: To grow columnar crystals over the whole alloy ingot and to obtain a permanent magnet by melting an R(TM)7W9 alloy consisting of a rare earth metal R and a transition metal TM and by pouring the molten alloy into a mold from the bottom at the time of casting.
CONSTITUTION: An R(TM)7W9 alloy consisting of a rare earth metal R and a transition metal TM is melted in a high frequency induction furnace and introduced into a mold 4 from the bottom through a receiving inlet 6 and a runner 7. The molten alloy 5 rises in the mold 4 slowly. The resulting ingot contains 60W 70% columnar crystals. This ingot is heat treated, pulverized, mixed with a binder, molded in a magnetic field, and calcined by heating to manufacture a permanent magnet.
