Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a resin markedly reduced in yellowing during molding and excellent in transparency and heat resistance, by copolymerizing an alkyl methacrylate with a specified N-aromatic-substituted maleimide monomer. CONSTITUTION:A monomer mixture consisting of 30-95wt.% monomer of formula I (wherein R<1> is a 1 C or higher alkyl) (most desirably methyl methacrylate), 1-60wt.% monomer of formula II (wherein R2 and R3 are each a 2 C or higher alkyl), most desirably, N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)maleimide, and 0-60wt.% monomer copolymerizable with the monomer of formula I or II (e.g., styrene) is copolymerized. A resin excellent in transparency, heat resistance and various optical properties (refractive index and double refraction) and remarkably reduced in yellowness can be obtained and suitably used as a material for optical fibers, lenses and optical elements.
