Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer which has a low birefringence and a low hygroscopicity and is excellent in mechanical strengths and useful as a base material for optical discs. CONSTITUTION:A mixture consisting of 25-100wt.% compd. A of the formula as shown (where R is H or CH3; R1-2 are each H or alkyl; l, m and n are each 0-2) {e.g., bis-methacryloyloxy)tetracyclo[4,4,0,1<2>,<5>,1<7>,<10>]dodecane} and 0-75wt.%, pref. 0-50wt.%, other monomer B copolymerizable with component A (e.g., methyl methacrylate) is (co)polymerized in the presence of a polymn. initiator (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) in an amt. of 0.01-10wt.% of the mixture and an MW modifier, if necessary, at 0-200 deg.C, pref. 50-120 deg.C, to give the title polymer pref. having a satd. water absorption of at most 1.8%, an Abbe's number of at least 45 and a glass transition point of at least 100 deg.C.
