Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a uniformly homogeneously arranged structure as well as a sufficient memory characteristic and steep threshold characteristic by providing a non-oriented film the surface of which is non-crystalline and has no periodic shape anisotropy in contact with a ferroelectric liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy and orienting the liquid crystal by an electric field or magnetic field. CONSTITUTION:The non-oriented film the surface of which is non-crystalline and has no periodic shape anisotropy is provided in contact with the ferroelectric liquid crystal having the negative dielectric anisotropy. This non- oriented film consists of a non-crystalline material and the surface thereof has no periodic shape anisotropy. The non-oriented film, therefore, has no orientation control power in the intra-surface direction. The liquid crystal is thereby easily made into the uniformly homogeneously arranged structure by the impression of the electric or magnetic field after injection of the liquid crystal; in addition, the sufficient memory characteristic and threshold value are obtd. even in a display operation stage. The desirable switching characteristic is thus obtd.
