CONSTITUTION:A lateral parity generating and error detecting circuit 6 generates the parity WP of data to a data storage device 5 in writing operation and detects an error in parity from data from a lateral parity storage device 4 and the data storage device 5 in reading operation, and a control circuit 1 is activated by an error signal PE once the error is found. When the data is written, the longitudinal parity is varied, so data in the same address and lateral parity are read in advance and parity calculation with a longitudinal parity storage device 8 is performed to initialize the parity. When the data is read, the lateral parity is inspected first. When the parity is correct, the data is read and used as it is. When the lateral parity is in error the lateral parity error signal PE is generated to inform a processor.
