Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise denitrification efficiency, in an active sludge process, by letting an excess sludge-extracting rate correspond to an averaged inflow rate of sludge returned to an aeration vessel, an averaged inflow rate of waste water and a fixed sludge-storing period computed from the temperature of water.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water having flowed through a waste water pipe 1 into an aeration vessel 2 is aerated by air fed from a blower 6 through an air-feed pipe 15, and then fed through an overflow pipe 16 into a precipitating vessel 3. Extraction of excess sludge outside the system is controlled by the method as follows: An output from the electrode 7 of a water thermometer located inside the aeration vessel 3 is fed to an operator 12 which calculates a sludge-storing period necessary at a minimum for nitrification at the water temperature, and the resultant output is fed to an operating controller 15. Signals, representing an averaged waste water inflow rate Q'i and an averaged returned sludge inflow rate Q'r operated 13, 19 on the basis of signals from an inflow meter 10 for the waste water and a flow meter 8 for the returned sludge, respectively, are inputted into the said operating controller 15. The operator 15 calculates a sludge- extracting rate Qex on the basis of these inputs in accordance with the formula, and the calculation result is outputted to a control pump 5.
