EXAMPLE: α-(p-Tolylsulfonyl)(2-fluoro-4-biphenylyl)acetic acid ethyl ester.
USE: An intermediate for drugs. An intermediate for α-(2-fluoro-4-phenyl)propionic acid having anti-inflammatory effect, analgesic action, and antipyretic action.
PROCESS: The methyl group of 3-fluoro-4-phenyltoluene shown by the formula II is halogenated so that it is converted into a halomethyl group, to give a compound shown by the formula III. The compound shown by the formula III and an anion (Sn 2 type) of a sulfinic acid shown by the formula R1SO2H are subjected to replacement reaction in a solvent, e.g., methanol, to give a compound shown by the formula IV. The compound shown by the formula IV is reacted with a dialkyl carbonate in the presence of a base, to give a compound shown by the formula I.
