Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the spectral characteristics, by forming a potential barrier between a vertical shift register and a P-N junction, in a solid-state image pickup device driven with a TDI mode. CONSTITUTION:To an electrode for signal charge transfer provided at a vertical shift register train 1, pulse signals phi1-phi3 with a period equal to a relative speed of an object are applied to actuate them at a TDI mode. A photodetector 5 is formed with P-N junction, and a potential barrier 4 separating shift registers 3i, 3k+1-3i and 3k+3 and the photodetector 5 is formed with a surface channel 9 formed by extending transfer electrodes 121, 122 covering a semiconductor substrate 6 of a shift register region up to an isolating film 11 on the P-N junction of the photodetector 5. Thus, since signal charges can be shifted in the vertical register train 1 in the same speed as the relative speed between the objective and the solid-state image pickup device, the mobile object can be picked up independently of the characteristics of short wavelength or long wavelength.
