Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily control orientation independently of the fine unevenness of the surface of a semiconductor substrate by causing orientation parallel to one substrate and allowing the surface of the semiconductor substrate having a built- in liq. crystal driving element as the other substrate not to take part in orientation. CONSTITUTION:A film 16 controlling horizontal orientation is made of polyimide resin. A glass substrate 17 is coated with polyimide resin by spewing or other method to form a uniform polyimide resin film on the substrate surface, and the resin is cured at once by heat treatment. The resulting film is rubbed with cloth, guaze, absorbent cotton or rubber. Thus, uniform and homogeneous orientation is caused to a guest-host liq. crystal prepared by mixing one of various kinds of liq. crystals with a dichromatic dye.
