Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal cell which does not require high contact pressure, does not cause cracking of substrates and exhibits uniform orientation by rubbing the surface of the liquid crystal cell substrate by means of a magnetic brush consisting of a magnet and magnetic powder attracted to this magnet. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic brush 23 is formed of a magnet 21 and magnetic powder 22 attracted to this magnet, and the surface of a panel substrate 24 is rubbed with this brush 23. The orientation layer formed with microscratching flaws in the parts rubbed by the ear tips of the brush 23 is formed, whereby desired orientation treatment is obtained. According to this method, there is no need for high contact pressure for the purpose of orientation and therefore there is no cracking of the substrate and the orientation treatment of easy maintenance is accomplished.
