Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the combustion of an internal combustion engine having an intake passage for low load and another for high load, through simple constitution, by orienting the communication port of the intake passage for low load, toward the stem of an intake valve to cause interference by the stem to disturb intake gas.
CONSTITUTION: An intake passage 14 for high load is opened into a combustion chamber 2 so that an intake port 14p is provided in an intake valve seat 10. The cross-sectional area of an intake passage 16 for low load is made smaller than that of the former intake passage 14. The communication port 16p of the passage 16 is opened into the other passage 14 upstream to an intake valve 6. The cross-sectional area of the communication port 16p is made smaller than that of the intake port 14p. The communication port 16p is oriented so that its axis 16c intersects that 8c of the intake valve 6 or extends near it to cause the interference of the stem 8 of the intake valve against the intake flow to produce Karman vortexes, turbulent flows or the like.
