Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a medium strength Al alloy for extrusion with superior toughness and press hardenability by adding Mn and Zr to an Al-Mg-Si alloy or further adding Cu.
CONSTITUTION: An Al alloy prepared by adding 0.4W0.7% Mg, 0.5W1.0% Si and 0.2W0.8% Mn to Al or further adding 0.05W0.3% Cu is cast into a billet. The billet is homogenized at 530W570°C for 2W48hr to solubilize Mg and Si as well as to finely disperse and precipitate an intermetallic Mn-Zr compound. The intermetallic Mg-Si compound is partially precipitated by forced cooling, and the precipitated intermetallic Mg-Si compound is solubilized by reheating to ≥480°C. The treated billet is then extruded, subjected to forced air cooling at ≥1°C/sec cooling rate or water hardening, and finally aged at 160W200°C for 2W24hr.
