Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high strength Al alloy with improved casting crack resistance by adding specified elements to an Al-Cu-Mg alloy.
CONSTITUTION: This high strength Al alloy consists of, by wt., 4.0W5.5% Cu, 0.20W0.50% Mg, ≤0.15% Fe, ≤0.15% Si, 0.010W0.10% Ti, 2W20% B to Ti, 0.020W0.30% rare earth element and the balance essentially Al. Ti and B make the grains fine and prevent casting crack. In the coexistence with B, less than the lower limit of Ti produces no effect, and more than the upper limit of Ti enhances the effect slightly. Less than the lower limit of B produces the effect hardly, more than the upper limit of B enhances the effect slightly, and excess B forms a compound in molten metal together with Ti, tends to precipitate, and makes homogeneous casting difficult. The rare earth element contributes to casting crack prevention, yet it is required to be coexistent with Ti and B, less than the lower limit of the element produces no effect, and more than the upper limit of the element reduces the strength and elongation.
