Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain cast iron with high nitridability for casting a metal mold by adding C and Si in the form of an almost eutectic composition to Fe together with a specified percentage of Mn, Ti, Cr and Al.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron is prepared contg. C and Si in the form of an almost eutectic composition and 0.3W1.0% Mn or further contg. ≤0.2% Ti, 0.25W2.0% Cr and ≤2% Al. The Al content exceeds the Cr content and is restricted to < about 1wt% to the total amount of the alloy. The C and Si contents are preferably adjusted to about 3.0W3.8% C and about 1.2W3.5% Si. This cast iron has superior nitridability and enhanced fatigue and wear resistances.
