Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare benzoin, in high yield, by dimerizing a crude benzaldehyde containing hydrocarbons as impurities in the presence of specific amounts of an alcohol, water and a catalyst, cooling and filtering the product, subjecting the filtrate to phase-separation, and recycling the aqueous layer to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of benzoin by the dimerization reaction of benzaldehyde, the reaction is carried out under heating in the presence of 5W 40wt% alcohol, 40W80wt% water based on said alcohol, and a cyan catalyst, using crude aldehyde containing hydrocarbons as impurities as the raw material. After the reaction, the reaction mixture is cooled and filtered to separate benzoin as solid crystals. The filtrate is separated into an oily layer containing the impurities contained in the crude benzaldehyde, and an aqueous layer consisting of alcohol, water and catalyst, and the aqueous layer is recycled to the reaction system. The benzaldehyde in the crude benzaldehyde can be utilized effectively resulting in the saving of resources.
