Abstract

PURPOSE: The alkylation and transalkylation between benzene and propylene under specific condition are followed by distillation, further the fraction containing trimethylindane is treated with a Friedel-Craft catalyst and recycled to the distillation process, thus producing the titled compound advantageously.
CONSTITUTION: (I) The alkylation of benzene with propylene is conducted using a catalyst containing aluminum trichloride as an essential component. (II) Then, the product is subjected to transalkylation in the absence of propylene in the presence of the same catalyst. (III) The product and the treated product recycled from the next step are distilled together and separated into the fraction of the titled compound (A) and the other fraction (B) and the fraction (A) is taken out as the product. (IV) The fraction (B) containing trimethylindane is treated with a Friedel-Craft catalyst and recycled to the step (III). The treatment converts trimethylindane into high-boiling compounds and its concentration is reduced in the system resulting in the inhibition of ethylbenzene formation and high purity of the titled compound.
