Abstract
PURPOSE:To manufacture a base material of high quality for an optical fiber a high speed by introducing alcohol into an oxyhydrogen flame in a vapor axial deposition method. CONSTITUTION:Methanol, propanol or other lower aliphatic alcohol is used as the alcohol. Starting materials for forming glass and gaseous Ar are fed to the central layer 5 of a burner 1 from an SiCl4 bubbler 12, a dopant bubbler 13 and a gaseous Ar source 9. The alcohol and gaseous Ar are fed to the 2nd layer 6 from an alcohol bubbler 14 and the source 9. To the 3rd layer 7 gaseous hydrogen is supplied from a gaseous hydrogen source 10, and to the 4th layer 8 gaseous oxygen is supplied from a gaseous oxygen source 11. A porous base material 2 is formed on the tip of a support rod 4 in a reactor 3. This base material is converted into transparent glass by heating in an atmoshere of gaseous He and gaseous Cl2. The resulting core material is jcketed with quartz glass as a cladding mateial, and an optical fiber is manufactured by drawing.
