Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber base material having wide-zone transmission characteristics by forming a cylindrical laminate on the outside of core glass obtd. by vitrifying a rodlike laminate and by vitrifying the cylindrical laminate to obtain clad glass. CONSTITUTION:Starting material gases are sprayed from burners 2A, 2B upon rotating stand plate 1 together with an oxyhydrogen flame to deposit reaction product 3 on the surface of plate 1 and laminate it in the form of a rod. Product 3 is then heat treated at a high temp. to form core glass 4, and an unnecessary portion is removed from the outside of glass 4 by cutting as required. Glass 4 is attached to chucks 5A, 5B of a glass lathe, and while rotating glass 4 starting material gas for clad contg. SiO2, a dopant, etc. and O2 as carrier gas are sprayed from burner 2C upon glass 4 in the longitudinal direction together with an oxyhydrogen flame. Glass 4 covered with a cylindrical laminate of reaction product 6 for clad is vitrified by heat treatment to form clad glass 7. Thus, an optical fiber base material is manufactured.
